What is buccal fat removal?

A surgical treatment called "buccal fat pad reduction" is a type of cheek surgery that addresses this issue, reducing the size of the fat pad located under the cheek. The entire fat pad is not removed, just the quantity that will resolve the unbalanced appearance of the face. It is important that this surgery is performed conservatively, as removing too much of the pad can create an unnatural appearance in the future. We focus on facial surgeries that create a natural look.

Cheek Reduction Surgery for a More Attractive Face Contour

Upon initial presentation, your face is what is first noticed about you. If you feel that your cheeks give you a chubby appearance, buccal fat pad reduction may be the surgical treatment that is best for you. The goal of this facial surgery is to give your face a slimmer appearance, and to create more definition between the cheekbone and the cheek itself.

Buccal Fat Pad Reduction

How is buccal fat removal performed?

Buccal pad reduction is performed with IV sedation in our outpatient surgery center. It is performed through an incision inside the cheek, with no visible scars. The incision will be closed with dissolving sutures (stitches). The surgery itself is a fairly simple procedure, and after healing, leaves your face with a more defined appearance.

The results may not be immediately apparent, but become even more so as the swelling from surgery decreases. Many people will assume you have lost weight, as reducing the size of the cheeks creates a noticeable change in the contour of your face.

Is Buccal Fat Pad Reduction Right for Me?

Some of us, due to genetics, have what is often called "chubby cheeks" or "chipmunk cheeks." When the lower cheeks are full, it can create an unbalanced or rounded appearance to your face.

To determine whether you are a candidate for buccal fat pad reduction surgery or cheek reduction get a consultation at our practice in Ventura. Various health issues must be evaluated, including the following:

  • A full health assessment
  • A physical examination of your facial structure
  • A complete discussion with you about the look you want to achieve
  • An evaluation of any medications you are currently taking

What is a Buccal Fat Pad and What Causes it?

The buccal fat pad is a pocket of fat that forms within the cheeks. It is located between the facial muscles and is easily isolated, making it the ideal way to reduce facial fullness quickly and evenly on both cheeks. Although an enlarged buccal fat pad can sometimes be attributed to weight gain, many times it is unrelated to weight, but is merely an inherited trait. The size of your buccal fat pads is related to your age, genetics, and the shape of your face.

What is Recovery Like After Buccal Fat Removal?

Buccal fat removal typically has an easy recovery period. Side effects are minimal, and you can go back to your normal routine very quickly. Without visible incisions or scars, you should feel comfortable enough to be seen in public soon after your surgery. The incisions in your mouth will heal quickly, resulting in minimal disruption to your eating and drinking habits.
