Buccal Fat Pad Reduction

View Gallery >>

Some of us, due to genetics, have what is often called "chubby cheeks" or "chipmunk cheeks." When the lower cheeks are full, it can create an unbalanced or rounded appearance to your face. A surgical treatment called "buccal fat pad reduction" is a type of cheek surgery that addresses this issue, reducing the size of the fat pad located under the cheek. The entire fat pad is not removed, just the quantity that will resolve the unbalanced appearance of the face. It is important that this surgery is performed conservatively, as removing too much of the pad can create an unnatural appearance in the future. We focus on facial surgeries that create a natural look.

Cheek Reduction Surgery for a More Attractive Face Contour

Upon initial presentation, your face is what is first noticed about you. If you feel that your cheeks give you a chubby appearance, buccal fat pad reduction may be the surgical treatment that is best for you. The goal of this facial surgery is to give your face a slimmer appearance, and to create more definition between the cheekbone and the cheek itself.

The cheek surgery, or buccal pad reduction, is performed with IV sedation in our outpatient surgery center. It is performed through an incision inside the cheek, with no visible scars. The incision will be closed with dissolving sutures (stitches). The surgery itself is a fairly simple procedure, and after healing, leaves your face with a more defined appearance. The results may not be immediately apparent, but become even more so as the swelling from surgery decreases. Many people will assume you have lost weight, as reducing the size of the cheeks creates a noticeable change in the contour of your face.

Is Buccal Fat Pad Reduction Right for Me?

To determine whether you are a candidate for buccal fat pad reduction surgery or cheek reduction get a consultation at our practice in Ventura. Various health issues must be evaluated, including the following:

  • A full health assessment
  • A physical examination of your facial structure
  • A complete discussion with you about the look you want to achieve
  • An evaluation of any medications you are currently taking

What is a Buccal Fat Pad and What Causes it?

The buccal fat pad is a pocket of fat that forms within the cheeks. It is located between the facial muscles and is easily isolated, making it the ideal way to reduce facial fullness quickly and evenly on both cheeks.

Although an enlarged buccal fat pad can sometimes be attributed to weight gain, many times it is unrelated to weight, but is merely an inherited trait. The size of your buccal fat pads is related to your age, genetics, and the shape of your face.

What is Recovery Like After Buccal Fat Removal?

Buccal fat removal typically has an easy recovery period. Side effects are minimal, and you can go back to your normal routine very quickly. Without visible incisions or scars, you should feel comfortable enough to be seen in public soon after your surgery. The incisions in your mouth will heal quickly, resulting in minimal disruption to your eating and drinking habits.

Why Choose Dr. Morrissette?

Dr. Morrissette is not only a cosmetic surgeon, but is a Board Certified Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon. His two decades serving as a facial trauma surgeon have resulted in a comprehensive understanding of facial structure. Can I eat normally after Buccal Fat Removal?

You will likely be placed on a liquid diet for the first few days after your surgery. You will need to be careful with particularly sharp or crunchy foods as the incisions continue to heal. After the initial stages of healing, you can return to regular eating habits.

Are there any bad side effects?

You may have slight swelling or soreness in the area after your surgery, but the incisions will heal quickly and any pain is easily treated with over-the-counter pain medication. Swelling is typically mild and will subside over the days and weeks following your procedure.

What results can I expect after the procedure?

Dr. Morrissette is very careful and precise when performing buccal fat removal. He can either remove the entire fat pad or simply reduce it to create a healthy, balanced facial structure. You will notice a more sculpted, flattering facial contour almost immediately following your surgery. The results will continue to improve over the two to three weeks following the procedure as you heal.

How long will my results last?

Buccal fat removal typically produces very long-lasting results. Your more elegant, sculpted facial look will last for years to come. It is recommended that you maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid significant weight gain to maintain your results.

Practice Policy Update Regarding COVID-19 View Update Virtual Consultation

The COVID-19 epidemic has created unprecedented circumstances for our community. Our practice has been paying close attention to the guidelines put in place by the government and the CDC and we want to reassure you that, as always, your health and well-being is our primary concern.

With this in mind, we are offering virtual consultations to patients via face time, however face-to-face in office consultation are still available. To schedule a virtual consultation or in office consultation call our office at (805)-214-4034.

Please know that we are constantly updating our services and staffing according to the local and national recommendations and doing our part to make sure that you are protected.

  • We continue to exercise all the latest recommendations that are handed down by the CDC. Our preventative measures include:
  • Fully training all staff members to understand the disease process and its modes of transmission.
  • Asking all staff, vendors and ancillary personnel to refrain from coming to the office if they have any signs or symptoms of a cold or an upper respiratory tract infection.
  • Asking every patient to refrain from coming to the office if they have any symptoms and inquiring about any pertinent travel history.
  • Hand-washing, as this continues to be the most important mode of prevention. Although it is something that we have always constantly done, we are now doing so with heightened vigilance and attention.
  • Constantly sanitizing all surfaces (which we have always done as an accredited facility). However, we have now increased this routine and are wiping down all surfaces, desks, door handles, keyboards and restroom facilities multiple times each day.

Although Covid-19 is a serious issue, we strongly believe that it will pass and hopefully make our infrastructure and our ability to deal with pandemics in this country even better than it currently is. We are closely monitoring this situation on a real-time basis and will update our practice’s guidelines as needed to protect our patients.
