Dermaplaning is a method of physical exfoliation that removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells to reveal more radiant skin. Performed by a physician or licensed aesthetician with a medical-grade scalpel, dead skin cells and facial hair are gently removed, leaving you with a healthy, fresh glow.

What is dermaplaning?

Time, pollution, and environmental factors all contribute to the layers upon layers of dead skin cells you have on your face. These cells can leave your skin looking dull and uneven in texture. Not only do dead skin cells prevent your skin from looking its best, but they also prevent your skincare products from being as effective. Dead surface skin cells also contribute to the visible signs of aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone, or a rougher skin texture.

How is dermaplaning performed?

Dermaplaning is a delicate procedure that should only be performed by a physician or licensed aesthetician with the experience and training to carefully and gently remove the dead skin cells without damaging the tissue underneath. When these skin cells are gone, you will see a brighter complexion, smoother skin, and a lit-from-within glow. While some methods of exfoliation can be more invasive and require downtime, dermaplaning is gentle and involves no chemicals, injections, or surgery. This is a great treatment for patients who are breast feeding or nursing and want to exfoliate, but are not allowed to use other peeling agents.

What are the benefits of dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning was a secret that models used to keep their skin looking fresh and glowing, but in recent years, it has become one of the most sought-after methods of skincare in the United States. When performed by a trained professional, dermaplaning can:

  • Reveal baby soft skin
  • Reduce the appearance of lines and creases
  • Reduce the appearance of acne scars
  • Remove vellus hair which can trap oil and lead to breakouts
  • Allow products to penetrate deep into the skin
  • Allow cosmetics to be applied more smoothly
  • Provide instant results
  • Has no downtime

FAQ

Is dermaplaning painful?

No. Dermaplaning is a safe, pain-free method of exfoliation. During treatment, your skin will be pulled taut, and you will feel a gentle scraping on the surface of your skin. Dermaplaning your entire face can be completed in less than 20 minutes. The experience will not be uncomfortable or difficult to experience.

Will my facial hair grow back thicker and darker?

You may have heard that your peach fuzz will grow back thicker and darker, but this is a myth. As long as the hair is superficial vellus hair, it will grow back at the same rate and texture as before the treatment.

Is there any recovery following dermaplaning?

No. Because dermaplaning is non-invasive, there is no downtime required following your treatment. You may immediately return to your daily activities as soon as you leave our office. Be sure to apply adequate sun protection, as your skin will be particularly susceptible to the sun’s harmful UV rays. Your skin could have microscopic peeling or flaking in the days following your procedure. You must apply moisturizing skin products as it may feel dry. Dermaplaning sessions are recommended every four to six weeks to maintain your youthful radiance.

How often should I have dermaplaning?

Your skin cells regenerate every 21 days. Dermaplaning can be done as often as every two weeks, although it is usually done when vellus hair starts to grow back, which is generally in one month’s time. For best results, schedule your treatments every three to four weeks to remove the dead skin cells marring your complexion, and keep your skin looking healthy and glowing.

Will dermaplaning have any effect on my skincare routine?

Removing epidermal skin also allows products to penetrate more readily into the deeper layers. Physicians or aestheticians may recommend this treatment to prepare the skin for medical procedures such as lasers, deep chemical peels, or before a cleansing facial.

Who is a candidate for dermaplaning?

While dermaplaning is a wonderful method of exfoliation, it is not for everyone. Dermaplaning is most often used on patients with rough, dry skin, superficial hyperpigmentation, mild acne, scarring, or fine lines and wrinkles. Those with extremely sensitive skin, rosacea, psoriasis, or active acne breakouts are not suitable candidates for dermaplaning. If you have acne-prone skin, dermaplaning is a great way to remove irritants from the surface of your skin, which can trigger breakouts. If you are sensitive to chemicals used in exfoliation or pregnant or prefer a natural method, dermaplaning may be the perfect treatment for you.
