Ear Repair Surgery – Otoplasty in Santa Barbara

Whether child or adult, protruding or overlarge ears are a distraction that pulls the eyes away from the other appealing, attractive, facial features. Otoplasty is the right procedure for people who have:

  • Ears that stick out from the head
  • Overlarge ears
  • Uneven ear structure
  • Shell-like ears
  • Cupped ears
  • Elongated earlobes
  • Drooping upper ear structure (lop ear)

Candidates for Otoplasty

Many ear surgeries are performed on children ages seven to fourteen. The ears have reached full size at around seven, and the child can have a much happier, confident life ahead if protruding or misshapen ears are corrected early. Adults who have lived with the condition for years are also candidates for an otoplasty. The results are often a dramatic improvement in overall appearance – and a huge boost in self-confidence.

About Otoplasty: The Procedure

This procedure can be performed under local or general anesthetic. Young children may need general anesthetic to reduce the stress of being aware of the procedure as it is performed. Every person is different in what they are comfortable experiencing. These issues will be discussed with you in a consultation, so you can make an informed decision.

Ear Surgery Santa Barbara: Enhance Your Look

In an otoplasty procedure, a small incision is made in the back of the ear to access the cartilage, which is then resculpted and artistically reshaped by Dr. Morrissette so the ear structure can naturally lay back against the head in an attractive, natural-looking position. The quantity of cartilage removed will vary from patient to patient, depending upon how the ear is structured and what must be done repair the area. In some cases, no ear cartilage will be removed. Every otoplasty surgery is customized to suit the individual condition of the patient, and to resolve the specific cosmetic flaws. Only a faint scar is left, hidden behind the ear.

Preparing for an Otoplasty

You will be given a complete list of instructions to follow to prepare for ear surgery. These instructions vary, depending upon the extent of the planned ear surgery. You may need to cleanse the ear area with anti-bacterial soap for several days prior to surgery. You will have prescriptions to take after the surgery which should be filled so they are ready to take when your procedure is complete. You are a unique individual, and your surgical treatment plan will be customized to produce the appearance you envision for yourself, or for your child.

Your Ear Surgery – What to Expect

After midnight the day before surgery, no food or drink can be consumed if the procedure is performed under general anesthetic. For patients who undergo the procedure with only local anesthetic, you can eat a light breakfast prior to your appointment. Wear freshly cleaned, loose-fitting, comfortable clothing, and ensure your top or shirt can be unbuttoned or unzipped and does not require being pulled over your head for removal. Do not apply cosmetics, lotions, or any other skincare products, and do not wear jewelry. The surgery will require one to two hours to complete. You can get a more accurate timeframe in your personal consultation.

Recovery After Ear Surgery

It takes some time for the surgery to completely heal, typically about six weeks for swelling to significantly reduce, but the improvement in your appearance will be visible within two to three weeks after the procedure. Swelling and bruising is expected after this surgery. You will be wearing a bandage for the first week or so after the procedure. This bandage protects the area, and holds your reshaped ears in place. You cannot get your ears wet for about three weeks, but are free to shower or bathe while keeping the area dry. Expect some soreness but it is not typically extremely uncomfortable, and is easily managed with either prescribed or over-the-counter painkillers.

Your Activities After Ear Surgery

You will need to limit your physical activities after ear surgery, and plan to have someone transport you from our Ventura facial surgery center when your procedure is completed. No exercising or vigorous physical activity should be performed for about three weeks. No contact sports for three to six months so your ears can heal as they should without the risk of being damaged due to impact. You can reduce swelling and increase your comfort with ice packs.
