Are you troubled by visible facial scars? Our scar treatment processes can be effective in restoring a smoother, more attractive look to your face. Many people have suffered bouts of acne in their adolescent and young adult lives, and their faces are left with visible scarring. Others may have scars associated with injuries. When these scars are visible on the face, it can lead to embarrassment or reduced self-esteem. It should be noted that scarring is permanent, and although the appearance can be improved, expectations should be realistic.

Addressing Facial Scars Effectively: The Processes

Scar treatments may not completely resolve the scar, but can reduce the visibility and discoloration of the scarred area. Treatments such as laser, chemical peels, the addition of fillers, along with a technique called subcision are available at our Practice. Your facial condition must be fully evaluated to determine which treatments will bring about the best change in your case.

Why do scars occur?

Facial scars are the result of a natural body response to trauma. People vary in the level of inflammation that is activated by the body.

While some people rarely or minimally scar, others have a more severe inflammatory response, and are much more likely to be left with an unsightly facial scar after the face has suffered some type of trauma.

We will evaluate your condition and advise you about what we can do to minimize the appearance of your facial scars. It may be possible to perform several types of treatments to reduce the visible appearance of scars.

Some of the issues that will affect a person's ability to reduce the appearance of scars include the following:

  • Skin type
  • Skin color
  • Ethnicity
  • Age
  • Individual ability to heal

Laser Resurfacing: Scar Treatments

Rough areas of the facial skin that are elevated can be resurfaced to create a smoother look through laser resurfacing. Creating a smoother look to the skin reduces the visible appearance of the scarred area.

Depending upon the type of scar you have, and your skin type, we may advise laser skin resurfacing for lessening the appearance of facial scars.

Subcision: Scar Treatments

Subcision remains a great technique for improving acne scars. Subcision involves treating the acne scar with a fine needle to lift the pulled down scar off the lower surface. This needling technique stimulates new collagen to grow into the facial divot. CO2 fractional resurfacing puts little tiny microscopic holes into the scar, stimulating collagen to grow into the scar, much like aerating your lawn stimulates the grass to grow thicker. These treatments have an overall effect of helping to fill in the scar, making it less noticeable, and smoothing the skin. In cases of severe scarring, we combine subcision and C02 laser resurfacing.
